I've exercised for three days in a row.
Three days ! Just a couple more and I'll be in a habit !!!
I'm following a Couch to 5K plan to walk/jog a 5K in five weeks.
Saturday and today I did intervals: "run 1 minute/walk 3 minutes" for a total of 30 minutes, plus a five minute walk for a warm up and a cool down.
Yesterday was a "rest" day, so I did a 20 minute walk at a moderate pace.
Tomorrow I'm going to go to Jazzercise.
Wednesday is going to be hard - I'm going to have to do that walk/run combo IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD in the early morning which means that people might see me which is going to be totally embarrassing.
I've been getting shin splints while walking and running. So I google researched it, adjusted my form for running, and now I only get them while walking, so the run parts actually feel like a relief !
But still, three days in a row. I can't stop now.
Between jazzercise, weight watchers, and no soda or refined sugar before 12 noon, I am finally realizing my goals at 36 years of age.

… And I'm back. Again.
For the fourth, or fifth, or six, or 27th time. I lost count, and I don't care. All I know is that I'm not giving up!
I had come close to giving up recently. I mean the official giving up where you actively say "I am not going to try to lose weight anymore" not to be confused with the unofficial giving up where you just stop doing all the things that you're supposed to be doing like exercising and eating healthy. I bought some new clothes in this larger size and I thought I still looked good, but the plain truth is that I am overweight my BMI is ridiculous and my knees hurt and my feet hurt. I have enough overweight relatives to know what comes next-it will actually become painful to exercise. I have enough trouble making myself exercise without it being painful, so I may as well stop gaining weight while I'm at this point.
I tried on a pair of my favorite pants recently and couldn't even zip them. I thought to myself "oh my god what have you done what have you done to your self?"
Even my dear sweet husband who has never said a single word to me about gaining weight, I can see that there is something different between us now. I've been able to sense at times some irritation on his part after we stop somewhere for food or I run back in the house to grab something to eat.
Being fat is the only thing, and I do mean the only thing, in my life that I hate. I have a fantastic life which is a result of some luck and making some really good decisions along the way.
I think about my size and about being fat and about how much I want to be thin what feels like every moment of the day. In reality, I think about it every morning when I wake up, every night when I go to bed, and every time I get dressed, or every time I see myself in the mirror. So maybe that's not every minute of the day, but it's a lot of minutes.
I think about food almost as much. I think about how much I hate cooking, how much I hate preparing food for myself, and and how I shouldn't eat or how I should not have eaten whatever it is that I'm about to eat or that I have just eaten.
For an average person at a healthy weight, I wonder if they think about this ?Are all of their thoughts encompassed with this sort of thinking as mine are ?
For today, there has been success. It is now 720 at night and the only thing I had eaten today that I shouldn't has been an extra dinner roll at dinner. Of course I haven't eaten near the amount of fruits and vegetables that I should, but right now I'm really just trying to focus on not putting crap into my body. I am inordinately proud of myself for this and I feel like I am on top of the world that I have made it through one day Without unnecessary sugar or crap.
I hope I can say the same tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the 1st day !
Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life.
My weight is the only area of my life that I can't seem to control, and it is the only thing about me where other people would be able to see my flaws.
Everywhere else and everything else about me is good. I have a good marriage that I work hard at, good friends, I volunteer, and I work part-time. I am organized in my house and my life, I cook dinner for my family 5 nights a week.
I am on a continual quest to be a better person, to improve myself.
Why can't I manage the food that I put in my mouth. I can control or at least deal with so very many other things that are beyond my control, why can't I handle my weight which is actually in my control ?!?!?!
I'm waking up tomorrow, going to boot camp, and here's my food plan for tomorrow:
eggs, whole wheat toast, and fruit for breakfast
water
coffee and 1/2 a fiber one bar
small salad, turkey sandwich and water
baked lays and diet coke
fruit and cheese stick
chicken, edamamae
yogurt, granola, and fruit for dessert
I CAN DO THIS !!!!

Weeks 5, 6, 7
Oof - did things fall apart or what ?
Well, they didn't really fall apart. I continued to do consistently well during the week for week 5, but then weeks 6 and 7 my husband was traveling, or we were all traveling, or there was red velvet cake in the office (my favorite) and I decided I needed a break for a couple of days.
The only accomplishment I can note is that when I did choose to eat something unhealthy or something I didn't need, I only had one serving. Meaning, 1 slice of cake, or 1 cupcake, or 1 Reese's peanut butter heart, or 1 Snickers. This is better than eating 2 servings !
I kept up my exercise every time I had a legitimate opportunity. So, for example, if the husband was out of town, I clearly couldn't leave the kids at home by themselves to go to jazzercise, nor do I want to pay $30 for a babysitter. But I did run at my friend's house several more times.
I also experienced some great workouts on some really quality equipment at my parent's gym when we were visiting them. My parents belong to a beautiful gym connected to a hospital complex type thing and they work out regularly. I did two run/walk workouts on the treadmill and 1 workout on the elliptical. I knew that I needed to have my heart rate up for at least 40 minutes and that I also wanted to go 2.5 miles. I was SHOCKED though at how many more calories I could burn my taking the incline up one level and by running for 65 or 70 seconds instead of just 60. I also tried a couple times to make my run intervals last for 2 minutes. I found that as long as I knew that I didn't have to do it every time, then it wasn't quite as daunting.
I also experienced how my hardest point comes at around 10 minutes into my work out, but once I've passed 20 minutes, I feel some endorphins or something kick in. Man, that feels awesome.
So, my new (optimal) workout routine is this:
Monday: Jazzercise
Tuesday: Jazzercise make-up if need be
Wednesday: Running (morning); and yoga (evening)
Friday: Running (morning)
Saturday: Jazzercise (morning)
Jazzercise includes a weight training segment, so if I can add in another weight training session, then I'll be in really good shape.
I've also cut down on some other community type commitments that had evening meetings. But with the meetings I have left, trying to see my friends (1-2 evenings per month), and date night (1x per month); I'm usually away from my kids 3 nights a week. Luckily I can usually schedule the social stuff so I'm not away from them 4 nights a week.
Of course, that optimal schedule also includes my husband being at home, which is tough since it's a busy time for him.
And doesn't something always seem to get in the way ? For example, look at what's on tap for this week:
I'm having some dental work done on Monday and I'll be under sedation, so I won't make jazzercise that night.
Tuesday night, the husband will be gone.
Wednesday day the girls have a dentist appointment so I can't run then, and Wednesday evening I have a meeting, so I can't go to jazzercise.
I will be able to run Friday morning and go to Jazzercise on Saturday morning, so that's good.
How about you - have you found any creative ways to squeeze in your exercise ?

I'm still here and I'm doing fairly well. I'm going to go and back date several entries because I really do like going back and reading them afterwards.

End of Week 4
At the end of week 4, I noted that I journaled Monday - Friday.
My accomplishment was that I practiced a couple times sitting with my hunger. Really letting myself feel what it felt like and how it wasn't so scary, after all. I know that for some people that can increase the urge to eat unhealthfully, but for me, I needed to remember that a little hunger was okay.
There were several years where I was either pregnant or breastfeeding (or both for a couple months) and getting too hungry could either cause me to get nauseous or could affect my milk supply. So, I definitely had started to eat when I wasn't hungry and it often wasn't the best of choices.
I also saw my weight go down a few pounds by this point. I don't necessarily track how much I lose every week, but I do weigh myself every day to make sure I don't get too far off track.
Probably the biggest accomplisment of this entire week was that I started a new form of exercise. My dear friend is a marathon runner and has a treadmill in her basement with a nice tv set-up to aid distraction. She agreed to sit in her basement with me while I tried to run on her treadmill.
I couldn't believe that I could do it. I ran a minute/walked a minute for 45 minutes and covered 2.5 miles in that time. I still can't believe I got through it. I was so, so proud of myself and those endorphins lasted all day.
It was a good thing that run kick-started my metabolism that day, because that evening was my monthly "Mom's Night Out" and I ate and drank a lot.
My commitments for the next week include:

Accomplishments End of Week 3
Here's what I noted at the end of week 3.
My accomplishments were keeping a detailed journal Monday - Saturday and that I was able to eat under my points on Monday. I ate very intentionally on Monday, eking out every last calorie for less points than I am allotted.
Again, I ate all my flex points on the weekend and then some, on Sunday. I just can't seem to get over the idea that the weekend is my time to splurge. On Saturday I ran errands for several hours and included a couple stops for snacks. I didn't think about what I wanted, just walked into 7-11 or the drugstore and looked around.
For the next week, I committed to being intentional about my flex points - trying to really plan out the 2-3 things that I feel like I have to have and allocating points towards them, rather than trying to use up all 35.
I also commit to journaling everything - every lick, taste, and bite.

Accomplishments End of Week 2
So, I'm doing Weight Watchers on my own. Any time I spend going to a WW meeting is also time that I could be at Jazzercise, and I don't think I'd stick with the on-line version. So, I bought a new journaling book/tracker thing on e-Bay and read through my old materials.
Anyway, at the end of each week in the journal, they ask you to list your accomplishments of the past week. I thought I'd share:
I journaled every single bite I put in my mouth. I did not journal the sniffs that I took when my friend was drinking courvoisier. They were only sniffs.
I'm letting myself be comfortable with being a little, tiny bit hungry. I needed to remember what that felt like.
I made a new 0 point recipe: roasted chickpeas. Not the same as chips, but definitely enough to ward off a craving.
I did not order a 3rd glass of wine or dessert when out to dinner with friends.
Yet again, I went over my 35 flex points for the weekend, this time by 7. Definitely got to work on that and figure out how to be more intentional about them.
Next week, I plan to only use 4 flex points on Friday night for 2 glasses of prosecco (I LOVE it !); maybe just 4 again on Saturday night, and then make a plan for what I want to have on Sunday. However, I will not exceed 35 points, and I'd like to get it lower.

A funny thing . . .
Gosh, I felt really devastated after writing yesterday's post.
When I was laying in bed with hubby that night, he said to me "Is there a reason that you have the scale set to 5 lbs. instead of to zero ?
What ?
What ?!?!?!
That means that I weigh five pounds less than I think I do ! I couldn't wait to weigh myself the next morning. Yep, it was true. The scale was set to a base of 5 pounds. The girls play in that area occasionally, and I guess they had accidentally adjusted it.
Talk about motivation - seeing that I had been successful in the past couple weeks makes me feel great !

I feel sad
I volunteered in my daughter's kindergarten class today.
This evening, I asked her if any of the kids said anything about me after I left. I said, "Did anybody think I was really mean, or did anybody think I was really nice ?"
She said, "No, they probably thought you were fat, because sometimes you are fat and sometimes you aren't."
She said it very matter-of-factly. It definitely wasn't mean - she thinks of "fat" as a descriptor, not as a good or bad thing.
I really thought I had a couple years left to get this under control before the girls noticed. I guess not.

I'm back on
Gosh, how many posts have I started with "I'm back !"
I'm on day 10 of re-starting Weight Watchers. I'm also trying to make it to Jazzercise 3 times per week, but 2 times per week is usually all I can do because of Mr. Quimby's travel schedule.
I'm journaling everything and I'm using up every single one of the 35 bonus points. I save them up for the weekend. A girl has got to have her prosecco, right ? At some point I'm going to have to cut down and not use all 35, but for now, it's how I'm getting through.
Other tricks this time ?
Progresso Light soups. I eat an entire can (which is technically 2 servings) (3 pts) at lunchtime and it really helps fill me up. Then, I have my 1/2 sandwich (whole wheat bread with a protein, 3-4 pts) later in the afternoon. The problem is that they have a lot of sodium, and I can feel that my wedding ring is tighter on the days I eat them. Supposedly, I should be able to off-set it with a big glass of water, but that doesn't seem to work for me.
Roasted broccoli. I have a serving at least 4-5 days a week. I need to try roasting other vegetables because I think it's starting to effect my GI system.
Seltzer.
Home-made veggie dip. I use non-fat greek yogurt and light sour cream and some ranch dressing mix. Because I only eat about 30 calories worth in a serving, I count it as 0 points. Not sure if that's right or not, but it makes me feel great that I'm getting some protein for 0 points.
Blogging and the computer. When I feel a craving coming on (like I did 30 minutes ago) I head to the computer. I can get lost in the blogosphere and sometimes the craving passes. Even if the craving doesn't pass, I eat my last thing of the day (yogurt, 2 pts) and head for bed.
Late afternoon is still an AWFUL time on the 4-5 days per week that I'm not in the office. AWFUL. I need some sort of fulfilling source of protein that is also low points. I've tried almonds (6 for 1 point) and cottage cheese (2 pts) but I still feel hungry. I usually don't have any meat on hand, but even if I had some deli turkey around, it wouldn't fill me up. I might try almonds and popcorn, or milk and popcorn. I LOVE cheese but there's so little of it that I could eat for 1 point, I don't think it would be worth it.
Sweet potatoes. I eat them at least twice a week and you can eat a good sized serving for only 2 pts. I steam mine, sprinkle with about 1 tsp. of cinn-sugar, and then warm them in the oven for a few minutes.
So, anyway, I hope you're hanging in there too. Keep an eye out for more late afternoon and late night posts !

Hell Yeah !
Two good days down, four to six more good days and I'll see lower numbers on the scale.
I ended Monday at 25 WW points (I should be at 22) and I'll end today with 22 WW points. It's not so much the points that matter to me - but more the fact that I ate health-fully and controlled my eating.
I have needed about 6 oz. of diet coke in the morning, though. I pour out half as soon as I open the can because I really don't need all of it, but I do like a little taste of it after breakfast.
I'm experiencing some mild tension/anxiety due to work and personal stuff - my mind is contstantly thinking "what comes next, what should I be doing now ?" I feel the tension in my shoulders.
Normally I can quiet that tension with a little debbie snack-cake (or 2) and a diet coke. Seriously - I can feel the sugar kick in and I can feel myself relax.
Today I tried carrots, canteloupe, meditating, and deep breathing. Nothing worked quite the same - annoying.
Actually, I'll bet you $10 that a jazzercise class would have taken care of it, but the DH is out of town and I am fresh out of babysitters.
I can't wait to do this again tomorrow. Seriously.

Seriously.

I'm ready
The sugar detox is complete. I had a piece of birthday cake at a birthday party today and while it tasted good it didn't illicit the chain reactions of sugar cravings, so that felt good.
I'm ready to start counting weight watchers points tomorrow. Here's what I've done:
I'm ready to start counting weight watchers points tomorrow. Here's what I've done:
- Gotten out my WW notebook and turned to the right page. I will be writing down everything I eat.
- Sketched out my meal plan for the next 5 days, staying within 21-22 points each day (my husband is out of town and my babysitters all went back to college so I won't be going to jazzercise to earn any extra points. Walking my 12 year old dog or playing with my kids at the park is good, but in my book it doesn't earn me points).
- Purchased all the food I need for the week.
- Right now, I'm just about to start my meal prep for the week, but wanted to take a quick break to post.
- I need to move the diet coke to the back of the fridge so I'm not tempted to grab one in the morning. I don't need it and I feel like it makes my body want more sugar.
I feel excited. I don't have any events that majorly involve food on the horizon for the next 10 days, except for a kids birthday party (which will likely involve a home-made from scratch cake. Ooh, must use my flex points for that day). In 10 days I'm going on a ladies only family reunion which will likely involve a lot of food, but not necessarily a lot of sweets. And I tend to be better about my eating when other people are around, plus I'll have the opportunity to get lots of sleep and exercise.
I can do this. I've done it before and I can do it again.
I. will. do. this.

Keeping On
Today is the third day of my re-commitment to healthy eating. I'm detoxing from desserts/high sugar foods/junk foods for 4 days (Monday - Thursday) and then I'll re-start counting WW points on Monday.
Days 1 and 2 went really well. Day 3, today, I accidentally ate a small bag of chips. It was definitely accidental - the girls and I were at a festival of sorts and I was patting myself on the back for not getting a funnel cake as I'm eating the damn chips ! Luckily it was only 4 points worth.
Day 2 was really an accomplishment because I was home by myself all day - luckily I didn't have any trigger foods in the house and I didn't go out and buy any. Whew !
Ramona and I are going to a birthday party later today - not sure what I'm going to do about that. I'm guessing that it will be a store bought cake, so it will be easy to have a small piece, if any at all.
What I'm finding now is the sense of accomplishment again from staying in control and making good choices. It's awesome.
My husband is away Sunday night - Thursday night and that will be tough. I'll be going to the grocery store on Sunday before he goes for a big shop to make sure I'm stocked up on what we need so that I don't have to take the girls out to eat.

Ugh
So, my birthday was two days ago and I am up an additional 2 pounds. Bringing my net weight loss to 10 pounds. SINCE MARCH PEOPLE. 10 POUNDS IN 6 MONTHS ? SERIOUSLY ???
The thing is, I know how to do this. I've done it. I lost 14 pounds in 7 weeks by eating healthy and exercising. I can do this.
But it's hard, and time consuming, and annoying.
But when I eat right I feel so. much. better.
The beauty of WW is that you can splurge one day a week and not gain weight (at least I could). And that's exactly the sort of plan I need. But what if there's more than one day in the week where you can't avoid going over your points.
This weekend I'm got dinner with friends on Friday, a long-awaited fancy dinner with the husband on Saturday, and then cake in the office on Tuesday for MY birthday. In theory, none of these things should cause weight gain when managed appropriately.
So, here's my plan:
Friday: walk/jog with marathon running friend in the a.m. Will boost my metabolism to help burn off Friday night's debauchery and encourage me to follow WW eating plan on Friday. Will be permitted small dessert, preferably sharing with friend.
Saturday: Jazzercise in the morning (natch) and WW eating plan on Saturday. Again, will be permitted to share dessert with husband.
Sunday: WW eating plan. Kids birthday party in the late morning, but I might be able to avoid most of the pitfalls there. Perhaps walk with children/husband. I don't expect to actually burn calories on this walk but perhaps it will boost my metabolism a little bit.
Monday: WW eating plan. Walk again by self or with children/husband
Tuesday: WW eating plan, with cake. Jazzercise at night.
Wednesday: Back to regular WW eating plan and Jazzercise schedule.
The next three months are really busy for our family with one thing and another. But March - April was also really busy and I managed to lose weight then and I can do it again.
Key for me ? Staying on schedule. Doing household chores at their assigned time, making dinner when I'm supposed to make it, getting to bed on time so I'm not tired the next day.
Speaking of which . . .

And here we go again . . .
I've been posting on an off for the past few months, but I need to get re-motivated so here's a quick recap:
Been overweight since I was 21 - just about 15-20 pounds then.
Lost that 15-20 pounds by the time I was 23. Kept it off until I was 26, started grad school, got stressed, gained 20 pounds by the time I was 32. Size 14.
Had 2 kids, gained while pregnant, lost afterwards. Size 14/16 at this point. Age 34.5.
Gained another 5 pounds. Size 16/18. Age 35.5
Gained another 2 pounds and lost my shit. Age 36.
Started jazzercise and went intermittently until 36.5.
At 36.5 years of age, I started following Weight Watchers plan on my own and going to jazzercise 3 times a week. I lost 14 pounds, went down one size to a 14/16, then gained back 2 pounds.
I've plateaued for the past 3 months. I stick to the WW plan 4 days a week, indulge a little the other 3 days but with going to jazzercise 2-3 times a week I'm maintaining.
But maintaining isn't enough for me. I need to LOSE IT !
Since Stacy started her diet blog, I'm going to restart mine. More coming . . .

Random
Week 4
One of the things I've been noticing since I've been eating better is the effect that various foods (or lack thereof) have on my body. If I'm feeling lethargic, I eat some complex carbohydrate and a protein, or frankly, just a protein and I feel better in about 10-15 minutes. If I eat a mix of protein and simple carb (like sushi) I can literally feel a tiny little bit of euphoria in my brain.
Some of these habits are set and are working out well. Now that I think of it, I didn't crave a diet coke when I woke up this morning. Although I do really look forward to my mock mocha at 10am-ish !
Week 3 wrap up
I still have to be pretty vigilant around my triggers - cookies have to be wrapped up and not easily accessible. I was at a ladies happy hour last week and I really had to plan out what I was going to eat when I got there. I stayed close to the veggies and the tortilla chips with salsa and AWAY from the chocolate. I also brought my own seltzer to mix with the wine. I did so good all night. But towards the end, I wasn't on guard and wound up eating three individually wrapped ghiradelli chocolates in pretty quick succession.
I'm also struggling with my free day - I'm eating kudos granola bars and drinking diet coke and eating whatever sweets I can get my hands on just because I can. And that's not the point of a free day.
When I think about the lack of sweets in this new life in the abstract, it's pretty depressing. I see a week stretching out before me with no sweets except on Saturday night. But day to day I seem to manage better.

Here we go again.
At least 3-4 times a week for the past, maybe 8 years (with the exception of when I was pregnant or nursing) I have gone to bed feeling some sort of negative emotion over my eating that day. Sometimes depressed, or sad, or annoyed, or mad at myself that I couldn't stay away from the sugar.
This time it's different.
And I go to be feeling happy, and proud, and even more determined ! It's working - IT'S REALLY REALLY WORKING THIS TIME !!!
I'm doing weight watchers on my own. Yes, WW works if you work it. And I've collected enough supplies over the years that I know what to do. I'm also going to jazzercise at least 2-3 times per week. I plan to go 5 times per week but something usually comes up a couple times. Two times per week is totally manageable unless Mr. Quimby is gone for a protracted period of time.
I'm going through and backdating entries so that they appear in an order that somewhat makes sense.
I AM DOING IT !!!

Pre-planning
I'm starting tomorrow and here's my plan:
Follow weight watchers - 23 pts per day.
Plan to go to Jazzercise 5 times per week. Make minimum of 2 classes, preferably 3.
No soda before 12 noon. Try to have water with lunch.
Work up to only one soda per day.
Eat protein in the morning. Minimal sugar before 12 noon.
Try to not eat a lot of convenience foods (granola bars, frozen dinners, etc.)
My daytime eating will be roughly the same, although I work in an office three days per week.
8am - Breakfast
2% cottage cheese (2)
6 oz. light V-8 juice (1)
9:15am Snack on way to work
whole wheat mini bagel (2)
water
10am at work
coffee with half a packet of no sugar added hot chocolate (1)
12:30 Lunch
Either a sandwich with 1.5 oz. turkey breast (1), whole wheat hamburger bun (2), Laughing Cow spreadable cheese (1)
OR
1/2 cup brown rice (2) and 2 oz. chicken (2)
water
2:30-3pm Snack (some combination not to equal more than 2 pts.)
Diet coke (how I love thee)
carrots and 0 point dip
pretzels (2)
12 wheat thins (2)
5 almonds (1)
1/2 oz. raisins (1)
Applesauce (1)
4:15pm water, fruit (1) I can eat in the car on the way home from work
6pm Snack if going to jazzercise
hard boiled egg (2) and vegetables (0)
Dinner at 6 if no jazzercise, at 8:30 if I went to jazz.
Monday - chicken, edamame, sweet potatoes
Tuesday - whole wheat pasta, jarred sauce (suprisingly low in points) with about 1/2 ounce of ground beef per serving
Wednesday - chicken and black beans, low carb tortilla, vegetable ?
Thursday - nothing planned, maybe sushi
Friday - nothing planned, maybe sushi
Saturday - baked tilapia, broccoli, white potatoes
Sunday - chicken, green beans, sweet potatoes
9:30pm - Snack
popcorn (1-2 depending on serving size)
milk (1)
graham cracker (1)
yogurt (2) if I have enough points
If I go to Jazzercise in the evening, then I have an egg and whatever vegetable I've made for dinner around 6:15. Then I eat the carb/starch/protein portion of dinner when I come home. If I don't go to Jazzercise, then I try to skip the late afternoon snack and make it to 6pm to eat with my family.
I measure whatever I can for dinner, but portion size isn't really my issue - I can eyeball the chicken, the pasta, etc. Sweets are my issue. I don't consider it "bad" if I go over my points by 1-2 due to a dinner that is 6 points and I go to jazzercise. It's hard to get below 6 points for dinner !
So that's it. Here's my plan.
